Chapter Fifteen

I felt better the next day.

Who wouldn’t?

After he made me come over and over again, Bain cuddled me in his arms all night, and I slept like a baby. Or maybe like I hadn’t since I’d been a baby. After waking up spooned with him, morning wood poking me in the lower back, I rolled over for some early loving that sent me smiling off to my first class.

Bain’s love was everything a girl could want, which made the fact I yearned for the other two seem greedy. But each of them were comfortable with that yen, with my feelings for the others. Much more comfortable, apparently, than I was, and each ready to move into mating.

The natural next step for fairies.

But they also weren’t pressuring me. I couldn’t call what Zephyr said pressure. And this morning, as I stepped into the dew-wet grass at the edge of the field where Maeve’s fighting class was about to begin, the sun breaking through a light haze matched my mood.

“Endy, are you joining us, or are you going to keep staring up at the sky for a while?” Maeve followed my gaze then shrugged. “I don’t see anything unusual up there.”

“I’m sorry, Maeve. I was just thinking. I’m ready to go.”

“Wings out!” She waved to the other students waiting behind her. “We’re going to do some one-on-one flying sparring this morning. I’ll pair you up.” As she named each set, the fairies in question grabbed weapons and flew upward to begin their battle. I watched students I’d battled with dwindling until the only person left was a wiry raven-haired fairy about a foot taller and twenty pounds lighter than me. Oh hell.

“Endy and Aine. That leaves you.”

I wanted to protest, but the look Maeve shot me warned me off. She’d made the choice for a reason, and I would have to just go with the flow and see what happened. Aine was the queen of battle and had never been bested. Not just in the classes I attended but apparently ever.

Did Maeve think I could beat her? Looking at Aine slapping the sword in her hand as she stared me down, I knew I couldn’t. Impossible. I was only grateful that the swords were blunted, and she wouldn’t be able to pierce my heart.

Because I had no doubt she’d be able to do that, and her fierce expression told me she’d probably like it. “Ready, Endymion?” Without waiting for me to answer, she lifted off and soared higher than any of the others who were already engaging in serious battle.

I’d never flown to that altitude, but I didn’t see any choice, so, muttering my opinion of my opponent and a similar one of the instructor who matched us up, I set my wings in motion and rose, slowly and less steadily than any of the others, but I got there. Eventually.

Then dropped back down to the ground, with Aine’s laughter following me, while I fetched the sword I needed to accomplish the task ahead of me.
